Just from shore and not for walleye. south of the North Bayou there is a small sandy beach where wind surfers launch from. It's sandy and shallow for a ways out and we caught smallmouth there at night. Sun doesn't matter there, or atleast it didn't. It was never a clear lake, but who knows now? Just troll deeper if you have to.

The boat is ready and the gear is packed. I'll be fishing by mid-afternoon tomorrow. I've never had much luck getting on this site with my phone so you may not hear from me until Sunday evening. The big fish stories (lies) will have to wait until then.

Good thinking. I just put you in my contacts. Prepare to be overwhelmed with photos of record-breaking fish. Or not.

I would not be surprised to see a pic of a 7 pounder, but doubt a record

I'm back. The walleye fishing was lousy, only one keeper in 250+ man-hours of fishing. The bass were hot though, and the pike were willing too so we did end up with something to show for our efforts. I really think the weather was just too nice. I got off to a rough start on Wednesday when the prop fell off my boat out on the lake. I had a spare, of course, but who carries a spare thrust washer and nut too? One of the other boats towed me in. I found what I needed the next morning and was able to get on the water by 10:00. After that the boat ran like a champ. I put a lot of miles on it but the best fishing was on the upper lake right by our cabin. I trolled and drifted both shores from 10'-30' for 2 days straight in the lower lake and caught only one pike and one bass. In all my travels I never saw any of the locals fishing there or anywhere, I guess they knew better. Still, I'm exhausted and smell like fish so all is well.

I drited crawlers all over that flat. All I caught were a couple of drum. The bass were up very shallow in the weeds. I never took a single photo, pretty sad huh?

I didn't say drift the crawler. The anchoring and bottom way. Anyway, glad you caught fish and had a good time. I never fished the lake this late in the season, but from your report, not many do.

So there weren't many fishing the lake? I'd guess that all summer long the walleye have seen everything so the locals are done with them and hunting deer. The vacationers are done with it being October, but still surprised nobody was fishing it.

All of the locals I talked to at the bait store, grocery store, marina, even our "landlord" seemed suprised when I told them we were after walleye. With some it was a raised eyebrow, one came right out and said "good luck with that".

Wow, really must've been fished out since the 90's. I do know most of the oldtimers in the early 90's loved the idea of walleye being planted in there, but started hating it a few years later when a phenominal crappie fishery was devastated due to it.

i hate to say it but they need to keep the walleye to the big waters cause they devastate smaller lakes

Just looked at the stocking report and see they stopped planting walleye after 2006 and started planting musky. That definitely has something to do with it. Also, there is a state park on that lake. I know many will have opinions on this, but I truely believe they lie some on stocking on some of those lakes. There was a very small lake near Margrethe that 3 of us ice fished one day a few years back from sun up to sun down and we swish cheesed that lake and used underwater cameras. Not a single weed in the lake and very clear, we never saw one walleye and the stocking info was that tons had been planted for a few years. It was not a lake you would ever think would be a walleye lake, shallow and very small with absolutely no structure or weeds. this lake also had a park on it. After that experience and hearing of a few other suspect walleye lakes I started believing there is some lying about walleye stocking on some state park lakes.

Also in continuation of my last post. Look at that stocking report for Hamlin and notice the walleye plants listed (private plant under permit). If there were that many planted by the DNR, there would be no reason for someone or many to pay for plants.
