This will be a first for me fishing for them in the open water before the season closes, usually it's on ice, but can you troll for eyes this time of year? Or do jigs take most of the fish?

Most of the time guys vertical jig them this time of year similar to ice fishing,but I do see guys trolling crankbaits early season in the rivers. Last year on the breast in freeland guys were using a small weight in front of them, and I think its for 2 reasons. To keep the bait down in the current and to help keep the debries from collecting on the bill of the crank bait, but the river was really high during the first couple weeks of the season.

Cold water trolling I have read that you need to slow it down and really rely on your electronics!

Thanks for the input. I have a fish finder but it is installed on my speed boat. I have a 12 ft. Meyers w/ a 5hp Johnson for my fishing boat. I'm going to fabricate a stationary mounting rig for the transducer of my vexilar to the boat so I will at least have a constant water depth report. I may just stick to vertical jigging then.

Jigging will serve you better now, but you can troll cranks just gotta slow it down. good luck to ya. I know they are killing them in the Saginaw river right now, but thats on the other side of the state for ya.

buddy and I did really good on eyes last time we had the SS Ghetto Fab out in January. We were jigging with fatheads.

I brought my droid x back with me because it can connect to wick...the phone doesn't work because its still on suspend until I vet home. I just wanted it to play games and sh1t on.

really good flat fish for eyes is a lazy ike red and white has always been my fav.... and if you can find the big ones they are pike slayers in the summer...... run em just under the surface over weed beds... for eyes ive trolled em with a bottom bouncer rig but never this time of year
