I've been researching on google, and I think we're gonna get started on building a decent sized indoor greenhouse to get some plants started early... I been wantin to get into the gardening more, and I think this is the year! gonna learn how to can veggies also this year, but will probably mainly use just the freezing method

Splash's dream is to have a greenhouse big enough to grow and live in. ;D Nah just kiddin, but I bet he can help you. We built a 10'x8' greenery for an old lady a few years back, it turned out pretty nice and she said she can grow every month very well except February. I've thought about doing a small one for just certain plants. We are also going to can alot this year like we used to, it's pretty simple. Won't belong and I'll be doubling the size of my garden and not neglecting it like last year. You get them chickens yet Kyle?

sounds good splash!! I dont want nothin huge, just something to start plants in before spring time! Yup, i've had the chickens since babies, they're just about 2 yrs old now. Only got 3 hens and 1 rooster, gonna add a few more hens to the gang, would like to be able to collect 6-10 eggs a day, and the ones I got now lay everyday so id like to get 3-5 more layers, and as long as the rooster dont get too mean i'll keep him around, or else hes getting turned into steelhead jigs!well have a couple gardens this year, 2 at my parents, and 1 at the girlfriends new place.

If you are looking to just start some plants indoors you really dont need to build much. All you need is a table and shop lights, you don't even need grow lights, just normal shop lights. You have to first decide when you plan on planting in the garden. I plan for the week before memorial day weekend, but last year weather set me back a week or so. Once you have your date you then look at which plants and how long they should grow before planting. Tomatoes- start about 5 weeks before planting. If you start much earlier, you will have them blossoming and putting on fruit before planting. Once you plant it will stunt the blossoming because all energy will be used to spread and grow roots for the first week or so. Cucumbers- Start some about 3-4 weeks ahead and when you plant, plant seeds along with them. Beans- direct seed in the garden, don't bother starting inside. Melons- Many "experts" will tell you not to start inside and transplant in the garden because you will damage the taproot. These "experts" are mostly from the south and don't understand our short growing season. I have done it and it's not hard, but you have to be very careful with the roots. Start them 5-6 weeks ahead of time. Squashes and zukes can be started 4 weeks ahead. Corn needs to be direct seeded in the garden. Onions should've been started beginning of February, so just buy sets this year. As for your set up in the house, it all depends on space and how much you want to start. You first need to get everything to germinate. Those domes Jiffy sells work good for germination, I used them last year. Only problem is the small cell each plant grows in is too small. After a couple weeks you have to pot up. Once your plants germinate, you remove the dome and put the lights an inch above them. You will need to set your shop lights from chains so every couple of days you can move the lights up an inch or so. If the light isn't an inch above them, your plants will get leggy and that's not good. I had leggy mater plants last year and it took them longer to fruit because of it. If you don't use the domes, try heating pads under the plastic trays you use.
